With proper care and regular dental check-ups, your root-filled tooth should stay trouble-free and provide a long-lasting repair. As the canals have been sealed, the risk of reinfection is significantly reduced and your tooth will stay intact and function just like the surrounding healthy teeth.

Tooth infection caused by decay, trauma or a deep filling often presents as severe pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, or gum swelling. You may also notice the tooth becoming discoloured or experience an unpleasant metallic taste.

Although root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, it will typically be nowhere near as bad as you were expecting! The sensation is very similar to having a standard filling, and you will feel immense relief once the pain of the tooth infection is removed.

When supported by a high-quality crown and good oral hygiene, a root-treated tooth can function perfectly for many years. While occasionally the treatment may need to be repeated, the success rates are high.

The only alternative is to extract the tooth to remove the source of infection. We always prefer to save your natural tooth whenever possible, as extractions can lead to shifting teeth and the added expense of bridges or implants.
