Most inlays and onlays are crafted from high-strength porcelain or composite resin, both of which are colour-matched to blend flawlessly with your natural teeth. For back teeth where strength is the priority and they are not as visible, gold remains an excellent and highly durable alternative.

Inlays and onlays are considered a stable, long-term solution for damaged teeth. Because they are custom-fitted to provide superior protection and can withstand significant chewing forces, they typically last between 10 and 15 years. It is important to treat them with care, maintain a good oral hygiene routine and attend regular dental check-ups.

You should care for your inlay or onlay just as you would a natural tooth. Daily brushing and flossing are vital to keep the surrounding gum and tooth structure healthy. Many patients find that because the margins are so precisely fitted, they are actually easier to floss around than traditional fillings.

We recommend taking a little extra care immediately after your fitting, avoiding very hard or crunchy foods for the first 24 hours in particular. However, you should be able to resume your normal diet within a few days once the inlay or onlay has fully settled, allowing you to eat with total confidence.
