COVID-19 update

Dear Patient:

We hope this letter finds you, your family and friends in good health. Our community, our country, our entire world has suffered so much over the last few months. All of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your care and safety. We wanted to give you an update on the progress the practice is making in preparation for our re-opening once we have been given permission to do so.

Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice and no doubt you have experienced this during your previous visits. Our practice follows stringent standards of infection control so that when you receive care, it is both safe and comfortable.

We are now focusing on new practice protocols in order to operate a safe and efficient dental practice for all our patients, our staff and our wider community following the COVID-19 crisis. We are working very hard behind the scenes to ensure your safety when we return to work.

You will note some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We are making these changes and revising our protocols to help protect our patients and staff. Please be assured a team member will guide you through any new changes. We are anticipating the following will be required (however this may be subject to change).

For example:

  • You will be required to thoroughly brush your teeth before arrival to the practice.
  • Our reception team may contact shortly before your appointment so to complete a pre-appointment screening process. You will be asked the same questions again when you are in the surgery.
  • On arrival, we will require you to use hand sanitizer and may require you to wear personal protective items which may include disposable gloves and masks. We will provide these items for you at our Covid-19 station.
  • Your forehead temperature may be checked using a medical grade thermometer. We may check your blood oxygen saturation using finger pulse oximetry – which is a non-invasive and painless infrared test.
  • Perspex panels or ‘germ-guards’ will be installed along the reception desk in the waiting room.
  • Patients are asked to limit extra companions on their visit to only essential people in order to reduce the number of people within the practice.
  • Reception waiting areas and communal spaces will be clearly marked out respecting social distance recommendations.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients which may mean that you are initially offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.
  • We will implement a daily health screening check point and log for the screening of all staff entering the workplace.
  • We will take steps to minimise staff interaction.
  • You are likely to see your dentist/hygienist and nursing staff wearing additional PPE.
  • Prior to any dental treatment you may be asked to use an anti-viral throat spray and rinse with a specific mouthwash.
  • Certain review appointments, necessary follow-ups and initial consultations may be completed over the phone or by utilising video communications.
  • Where possible, all treatment payments and further appointments will be made over the phone.
  • Patients may be requested to remain outside the practice until the dentist is ready for them. You may then be escorted straight to the surgery by a member of staff.
  • You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer newspapers and magazines, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.

As the COVID-19 global knowledge base grows we expect further recommendations which will impact how we deliver your dental care. The integration of additional infection control measures, modified treatment procedures, revised practice protocols and any other safety recommendations will be addressed by the practice when advice is provided by our professional governing bodies.

I would like to remind you that we continue to be contactable for all our patients by the establishment of our remote urgent care service. We have established secure remote access to our clinical database. We are available 7 days a week regarding any dental problems or concerns you may have during this outbreak. We will be able to provide temporary filling kits, offer advice; prescribe pain relief and antibiotics should your symptoms meet certain criteria. For dental problems we are unable to manage we have access to refer patients to the COVID-19 dental emergency Hub network. We are also happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are implementing to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice.
