Cosmetic Bonding
One of the most simple and least expensive cosmetic procedures, cosmetic bonding is an effective way to improve the appearance of any tooth which is decayed, chipped, broken and/or discoloured. It can also be used to lengthen teeth, as a white filling (a popular alternative to amalgam fillings) or to re-build and protect part of a tooth where there may be root exposure due to gum recession.
In cosmetic bonding a tooth coloured resin (composite) is attached directly to the tooth itself in order to re-build and restore it. The composite is shaped and polished to the correct shape and size until it matches your other teeth.
Unlike veneers which are manufactured off-site, bonding can be placed on your tooth in just one visit.
The stages of composite bonding:
- Your dentist will select the correct colour of composite resin to best match your other teeth by using a shade guide. The surface of your tooth will be slightly abraded to roughen it and a conditioning liquid will be applied to help the bonding material stick.
- Following this, your dentist will apply the resin which will be moulded and smoothed into the desired shape and size. This will be hardened under an ultraviolet light and further trimmed and shaped if required. Lastly, the composite will be polished until it blends in with the rest of your teeth.
Things to be aware of:
Although very durable, a composite resin is not as strong as your natural tooth. With proper maintenance, a composite bond should last for several years but remember that it can be damaged by fingernail biting or pen chewing!
A good oral hygiene routine is important in order to protect your composite bond. Brush your teeth twice a day and visit a dental hygienist for professional cleaning.
Certain food and drink items like tea, coffee and wine could all potentially stain the resin. Likewise, cigarette smoke can also discolour the resin.
